Hey Everyone. I saw just a few minutes ago that yet another very popular Rapidshare website has decided to do something I despise. The first thing they are doing (which is unacceptable), is beginning to charge their visitors to access features that were previously free....
They're going to charge for a linkchecker system, and for a TV Air Dates countdown, both of which they used to offer for free (and aren't that great anyhow).
We already have a link checker, and our TV-Series Air Dates calendar is being worked on, and let me tell you, it's going to be wicked cool by the time we're done with it.
Second big transgression this unnamed website is doing, is telling all their visitors to understand that they must start charging, because they don't have enough money to support the number of people visiting the website. This is a lie. If you check out their advertising page, you'll see they charge around $150 for one advertisement for a month, and they have 3 on the website. Our server costs $70 a month, so for them to say they need more than $450 a month is absolutely absurd.
Now that I've made you guys aware of how this other website is deceiving you and ripping you off, let me make a promise to you about what you can expect from SinlessLinks.
First off, we do ask for donations, and trust me I know that asking for $70 is pretty steep. However, when we only make 50 cents off advertising a day, this leaves us with about $15 a month, which is still going to pay back the people who loaned us over $300 to start the website. As soon as that debt is gone, the amount we ask for in donations will be lowered.
That said, my first promise to you is that we'll never falsely ask for more money than we need. All donations will always be welcome, but we'll never claim we need more money if we don't.
My second promise to you is that we will never take free features and start charging for them all the sudden. We do intend on having a "VIP/Premium" section, but the intent of it is to do two things. One it's to reward our loyal donators, because they keep the site alive already without any incentive, and we really want to thank them. In addition, it will give us the ability to do some really cool features, that we simply can't provide without having some financial support for them. We won't ever take previously free features and make them VIP only though. Just like we won't ever make any sort of delay between when we post something and when free users can get to it. Some of our competitors do that, and we strongly disagree with the idea.
In short... be wise about where you donate your money to guys. I'm not asking you to donate it here, but I am asking you to check out a place before you do. Our competitors are making big bucks for doing nothing (and whining they don't have enough money), and we're doing a lot for free, and are honest with you about our financial situation.
To Summarize: I promise we'll never tell you we need money when we don't, and I promise that we'll never take free features and make you start paying for them.
