This is possible.

In Internet Explorer upi can open a link in a different window by holding SHIFT on your keyboard while clicking the link. Open it in a new tab by holding CTRL while clicking the link. Works the same in FireFox

In Safari you can open a link in a new tab by holding the command key while clicking.
